The acrylic resin leather coating agent modified by nano-SiO2 is investigated in this article. Nano-SiO2 is prepared by the sol–gel reaction from tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) catalyzed with acid and mixed with an acrylic resin. The properties of nano-SiO2 particles at different aging times are studied. The physical–mechanical properties of the films from modified acrylic resin by nano-SiO2 sol particles are obtained. Besides, the hygiene property of the leather finished using nano-SiO2 is measured. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) are employed to characterize the presence of nano-SiO2 particles in the SiO2 sol. The acrylic resin and modified acrylic resin are analyzed with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results show that the physical–mechanical properties and hygiene property of the film from SiO2–AR (acrylic resin) coating agent composite increase notably: air and water vapor permeability are improved by 15.4 and 11.5% respectively.

Key Words: sol-gel • nano-SiO2 • leather • finishing agent
